The thirteenth is a highly regarded hole, and it is quintessential West Sussex golf on full display. There is a large expanse of heather in front of the tee, then left and right all the way to the green. To the right stands gorse and broom with a bridle path within and there is a fairway bunker left to catch a pulled tee shot. The second shot is across a small hollow and up a slight rise to the green perfectly set against a backdrop of a copse of trees, with a thatched shelter within that offers refreshment on special club days but only an adjacent water fountain otherwise. Green side bunkering is extensive and intricately shaped, and unusually for West Sussex, the front one must be carried to get home. The green is the most contoured of all so all putts require good line and pace control and any long putt is a good two putt test, particularly those down and across the severe slopes. Don't expect a par here unless you hit two good shots and putt out well, or unless you can visualise and make a fine recovery shot to which you add holing a tester too. Either way, this will feature amongst the most rewarding of your pars made.
