| Many see this hole as the best par four at West Sussex, and its stroke index of three verifies high standing. There is a glorious vista over the far tree lines into Sussex countryside in the far distance, and the familiar sight of one more vast carry over heather which departs left and right of the fairway to rejoin behind a green hidden for the moment by a dog leg right. After a fine drive, the green can be seen placed to perfection, below and beyond fairway bunkers. The green is protected to the right by an inset bunker, with a bridle path and gorse hedges close by, and to the left by a steep bank with another bunker to the front, beyond which are rushes and an out- of- bounds pond. The skill of the design is totally evident and unfortunately more than a match for the skill needed to overcome all these obstacles placed before the golfer. The green has a slight slope from the right hand side but is essentially flat with little borrow. It is narrow but long so distance control is the primary concern here, once you have secured a place on it. The fourteenth is a hole to survive as much as to play and enjoy visually. It is also a card destroyer if poor golf and perhaps fates intervene unkindly. |
